Laura Rokas-Bérubé

b. Montréal, Canada

Laura Rokas-Bérubé’s disillusionment with the California Dream led her to San Francisco’s Recology Center and their “Mount Amazon”. Doing her part to lower the mail-order corrugated mountain, Rokas began building wild and odd cardboard landscapes. These dream worlds become cynical commentary on consumer culture within the progressively fancied Bay Area, complete with their own logics, histories and experiences. Rokas is a known bicycle fanatic, Canadian nationalist, and covetous of all good luck charms. A virtuoso in paint and ceramics, she blends 2D and 3D boundaries to craft eerily rendered hybrids. She calls attention to craft, cuteness and the pure labor of creation, reminding her viewer that any woman-made “expo” can be destroyed.

Rokas is from Montreal, Canada and moved to the Bay Area in 2014. She focuses on paintings, ceramics, embroidery and sculpture. Her work is in numerous private collections and she has exhibited at SOMArts (San Francisco, CA); Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (Toronto, Canada); and Guerrero Gallery (San Francisco, CA).
